First time average pay for first time fictional novel?
I’ve written a fictional novel about WWII and my agent says a publisher, (not a huge one, but not tiny either…mid size and in based in USA),who is very interested in publishing it. Anyone have a rough idea what I can expect to make off this? My agent says they do offer advances, but they have not given her a number yet. I know agents get a percentage, but the most money seems like its made on the sales royalties. I have never sold anything before, s this s a first for me.
Typically the way it works for a first timer is a low advance based on royalties. I’m surprised that all of the people claiming to be in the publishing industry haven’t shared this with you.
So for example, say you got a $5k advance. You wouldn’t be paid any royalties until $5k of your percentage of the royalty is earned.
First time authors get the absolute minimum. Many get no advance at all and a paltry royalty amount. The reason being, there are literally thousands of authors that offer their work for next to nothing to get that first piece in print. There is basically zero competition for first time authors, I don’t care how well the work is written. This is why self-publishing thrives and authors are the one paying.
Getting an advance is typically done to secure an author’s work in a contract so that other publishers cannot pick them up. They will typically only do this if they feel that there would be competition for your work.
So it’s really up in the air, but I would be shocked for a paperback fiction from a first time author to get a $33k advance or anywhere near it.
